Business Motto
My personal business motto is derived from a quote by the British Economist JM Keynes – “In the long run, we are all dead”. I know this sounds a little heavy… but I take it to be that while accounts and tax are important, there should always be some scope to enjoy work, life and have a bit of a laugh every now and then! Things need to be kept in perspective.
How do I make contacts
I prefer the social approach to meeting people and mainly make contacts face to face at networking events. We also get a lot of referrals from clients, which is great.
What makes your business different
The team. We are all unique personalities, but all pull in the same direction.
What do I always have with me
A watch. I hate avoidable lateness!
Do you dress up or down for business
I usually try to match the setting or client – some clients expect their accountant to be suited and booted, some would prefer a more casual “no tie” approach. Personally though, I prefer suited and booted.
Which person has inspired you most in your business life and in what way
I don't particularly have any “business heroes” - I think we choose our own career path, who we work for and way of working because it challenges us, motivates us or makes us happy.
What's your proudest achievement in business
I would say that passing all of my AAT and ACCA exams at first attempt was a big achievement! And a big tick off my list!
What's your company's greatest asset
The team – we are a professional, but friendly bunch who can offer complicated solutions in straight forward ways.
Do you use social media and if so with how much success
We have a strong social media presence at Sheards, but I will be honest and say I am not heavily involved with it, and I rarely use it in my social life – I prefer face-to-face communication, but I absolutely see the benefit of it.
If you hadn't gone down your chosen career path, what would you be doing
I didn't fancy university at all, so upon completing my A-Levels, I lined up a few interviews – one of which was in the Armed Forces. My mum in particular was pleased when I took the first job I was offered – Sheards!
Give us one tip for a successful business
Decide what you want to be, who you want to deal with, and who you don't. Make sure you don't compromise on that, because you are at work for a significant amount of your waking days. When you enjoy what you do, success can be measured in many terms, not necessarily just the bottom line.
At what time of the day are you more creative or inspired
I am certainly more “productive” in a morning – I try to assign this part of the day for my bigger, more complicated tasks!
How do you relax away from work
I'm sure many people will say the gym here – but I do genuinely enjoy it! I'm also a fan of live music and festivals – enjoyed with friends and few beers of course!
When do you take your coffee break
I'm usually found with a brew about 10am and 2.30pm – not sure I would call it a “break” however.
Who would you most like to have a coffee with
Someone who knows how to make a proper brew.
What's your coffee break favourite
There is only one choice and I'm afraid it isn't a coffee – it's a Yorkshire Tea!!
