What is your business motto?
This is a simple one for me: be yourself, not the person you think people want you to be.
What makes your business different from others?
I believe we are different from many businesses in how we get the right balance between technology and people. With the huge revolution in cloud accounting going on currently we have strived to ensure that whilst we are at the forefront of that movement, offering a modern accounting solution to our clients, we also maintain our core value of providing a friendly, face-to-face service to our clients, giving them valuable information in a way that they understand.
What do you always have with you?
The obvious answer is my phone. Digging a bit deeper, one of the great things about always having my phone is being able to get in my car and access my music collection at the click of a button. This helps me switch my work brain off whilst driving home! If it's been a particularly testing day then The Whole of the Moon by The Waterboys never fails to do the trick – sheer perfection!
Which person has inspired you most in your business life and in what way?
There is no one person in particular. Lots of clients amaze me, balancing business and family life, turning small acorns of ideas into great businesses, turning round struggling businesses through sheer will power, the list goes on. Almost every day someone in business impresses me and that can inspire me for that day.
What's your proudest achievement in business?
I get a buzz out of seeing a client's business grow and develop. Being very humble myself, I don't expect to receive particular thanks for that, it is the business owner himself who will generate his or herself' s own business success. Nonetheless, success stories are great to see and give you confidence in the work that you do with your clients.
What do you believe is your company's greatest asset?
It is our people. We have a tag line – “the friendly face of accountancy” – and at most times, day-to-day, I believe that we stick to that motto. We have a great team who do a fantastic job for our clients in a professional and friendly manner.
Do you use social media for business and if so, with how much success?
We use several social media channels. They all contribute to our brand profile in many ways. One way we use it is to promote events we host, such as cloud accounting seminars, property landlord tax updates, or charitable events such as our recent quiz evening at which we raised funds for the Welcome Centre in Huddersfield. Social media helps hugely in promoting these types of events.
If you hadn't gone down your chosen career path, what would you be doing?
Realistically, I was always destined to being office based. I have never been practically minded – the nearest I get to DIY is assembling flat pack furniture! A less realistic career path, but a much more interesting answer, is that I am a frustrated drummer! I still don't think I am too old to get started! So that would be it… a drummer in a hugely successful rock band!
Give us one tip for a successful business
Be honest with everyone… staff, clients, suppliers, and whoever else you deal with when you are going about your business. Be the same outside the work environment too.
How do you like to relax away from work?
My big passion is football. I have run a junior football team for 10 very enjoyable years. They are Under 17 this season so those days are almost over unfortunately - there will be a gap to fill there (drumming lessons maybe?!). I am a season ticket holder at Huddersfield Town and thoroughly enjoy the extraordinary ride we are on at the moment.
Away from football, I love listening to music – I bought a turntable at the start of the year and have been rediscovering vinyl. I can now often be found in Vinyl Tap in Huddersfield, or at record fairs. My wife Emma thinks I am obsessed, and she may be right! I also enjoy socialising with friends, but who doesn't?! Above all else, being with family (my kids Hannah, 19, and Sam, 16, are growing up way too fast for my liking!) and friends is the most important thing to me.
